Annual surveys are undertaken by the Marine Institute (MI) in collaboration with oyster co-operatives to assess oyster stocks. These surveys provide estimates of biomass and size structure (i.e. an indication of age) and are used by co-ops to decide on whether the fishery will open in a given year and what the total outtake will be. Overall, the biomass of native oyster in Ireland is quite low in all areas, with the exception of Tralee Bay. Explore more about Shellfish resources in Ireland in this Interactive Story Map
